Opportunities In Arctic Wood

07.12.2011

The slow growing trees in arctic conditions produce different compounds than the fast growing trees of south. These trees have been researched fairly little, according to the Forestcluster Ltd, a company attempting to produce new business opportunities for the Finnish forestry industry. Finnish researchers are looking for, for example, starting compositions for medicine development and compositions for health effective provisions from the arctic wood.

Nature’s molecules have an enormous potential both financially as well as regarding bioactive effects in cell and disease models. Wood is also a renewable raw material and the lignin in it can replace oil based plastics. To speed up their business, Metsäklusteri Ltd. is planning a new “Wood Valley” operation mode; a “local hatch” for companies specializing in wood processors and wood fibers.
