Finnish energy company,St1, plans a new bio refinery to Kajaani to produce ethanol from sawdust. The planned facility will produce 10 million litres of ethanol a year. The project has already received the environmental permit, the investment decision is expected soon and the plant is forecasted to begin its operations during 2016.
St1 opened their first ethanol plant in 2007 and currently it manufactures transport fuels from bio waste and food industry waste streams in five plants in Finland. The company is looking to reach a production capacity of 300 million litres by the 2020s. (Source: www.tekniikkatalous.fi, 18.6.2014)
