Finnish Ship Industry Delivers Arctic Tanker Technology

Finnish ship industry companies have received a good amount of orders in 2014. South-Korean ship dock has asked Finnish Aker Arctic, ABB and Wärtsilä to help with an order of 16 lng tankers to the Arctic area. Aker Arctic has developed the ships’ technology and planned the concept of the order. Wärtsilä has also made a contract of delivering 54 big multi-fuel engines, which will be manufactured by Wärtsilä’s Korean cooperation partner.

Only ABB has received EUR 700 million worth of orders for arctic ships. ABB develops electrification and automation solutions in Finland, and the flag ship product is an electric Azipod-propulsion system. The Azipods meant for Arctic areas are designed so that the rear of the ship works as the ice breaker. The largest orders are for 16 ice breakers with the technology and in addition ABB will deliver generators and electric components to the main ships’ electricity centres.
