Finnish Marine Industry Breaking Records

28.11.2016

The Finnish marine industry is breaking records in orders. In two years, cruise ship orders have risen from 25 to 67, and order books are filled for the next 10 years. In addition, there are orders on new passenger ferries, ice breakers, as well as repairs and refurbishments of old ships, which all in all will amount to about 200 vessels that Finnish companies are and will be working on.

For example, just this autumn Turku shipyard has secured an order of two cruise ships from Carnival Corporation and the shipyard recently announced a deal of two LNG cruise ships for Caribbean. Turku shipyard has expanded its investment program to €75 million which includes new steel preprocessing plant and warehouse, gantry crane, and modernization of a cabin plant. Also, Rauma shipyard has secured an order of 4 ships from the Finnish Defense Forces.

The Finnish marine industry consists of about 1000 companies and about 90 % of the marine industry’s production is exported. The most important export countries are Germany, France, Italy, Russia, China and Japan. (Sources: Tekniikka ja Talous 25.11.2016 & 11.10.2016, Kauppalehti 14.9.2016 & 29.8.2016)
