The Finnish Railways Plans To Order a Couple Hundred Diesel Locomotives

05.02.2012

The VR Corporation (Finnish Railways) is preparing to purchase around 200 diesel locomotives in addition to the order of 80 electric locomotives that was announced last week, according to Tekniikka & Talous magazine. The price per each electric locomotive is few EUR millions.

These new diesel locomotives are meant to replace the DV-12 locomotives manufactured by Lokomo and Valmet between 1963-1982. VR has nearly 200 of them.

The precise number of the diesel locomotives is still open. The size of the order depends, among other things, on whether the state plans to electrify new railway sections and how the railway traffic is opened for competition. (Source: www.tekniikkatalous.fi, 13.01.2012 & www.kauppalehti.fi, 27.01.2012)
