Helsinki-Vantaa airport has received international ACA certification (Airport Carbon Accreditation). The airport has invested in LED lighting, ground source heat and pellet energy production. The airport is also currently building a solar power plant with 500kWp power which will be completed by 2019. When finalized the power plant will produce about 10 % of the energy needed in the new terminal expansions. In addition, airport operator Finavia started fueling its vehicles with renewable diesel.
Siemens and Lempäälän Energia have signed a contract to design a decentralized energy production system. The system will include two solar panel fields, with 15 000 panels and a capacity of 3600 MWh, as well gas motors, fuel cells, and batteries to secure consistent energy supply. The first project deliveries were planned for the end of 2017. (Sources: Tekniikka ja Talous, 3.8.2017 & 27.9.2017)
